IT’S A APPLEPALOOZA!

Ap·ple : The fleshy usually rounded red, yellow, or green edible pome fruit of a usually cultivated tree (genus Malus) of the rose family; also : an apple tree

Everyone knows that there isn’t much better in this world than a freshly picked organic apple right off the branch. But there’s a lot more to these tasty treats than meets the eye.

DID YOU KNOW… That apple seeds contain amygdalin, a cyanogenic glycoside. In other words, it’ll kill you dead if you eat too many of ‘em! (How in the world does that Applejack pony live on!?)

As one of the most popularly eaten fruits in the world, apples have grossed over 10 billion dollars in wold wide revenue with over 55 million tons being imported and exported each year. China, the world’s leading producer of apples, can only be matched in its lust for this fine fruit by America, in second place with a production rate of about 7.5% of the world’s apples.

How to pick the best apple (from a grocery store!)

  • Look for unblemished, smooth apples. Brown spots or indents denote some degree of over ripening, which can really alter the taste. (Because, seriously, who wants to take a bite out of a mushy apple!?)
  • Apples that smudge easily or are strangely musty looking were likely sprayed with a whole lotta’ pesticides, which probably aren’t in our diets. Be sure to purchase a fruit and vegetable cleaner and rinse off those suckers before you get that first juicy bite from ‘em!
  • Think about what you’re doing with the apples. For general grab-and-eat apples you’d leave on a table or counter, Granny Smiths, Fujis, and Red Delicious are usually the most favored. Fun fact about Fuji apples: They store much better than most apples, so they usually last a tad bit longer. You can Google any other apple related recipes you’d like and can find tons of guides detailing which apple is best for what.

Always remember that while apples will store for a small while on the counter, they’ll keep for weeks if you keep them in the crisping drawer of your fridge!

Happy Applebucking, everypony!
